The Baily Thomas Provident Fund is a grant making trust set up to benefit the former employees of Mansfield Brewery plc and its subsidiary companies, their spouse and their dependants.
The trustees consider and offer a wide range of grants and benefits for those who are eligible to apply. These include support in times of need; to help with health and wellbeing; to encourage and support an active lifestyle; to advance learning and education.
Established on 2 October 1970, the Baily Thomas Provident Fund was set up under the authority of the Court of Protection on behalf of Frank Bruce Baily Thomas, whose great-grandfather, the late William Baily, was one of the co-founders of Mansfield Brewery in 1855.
Diagnosed with learning disabilities at the age of just 4 years, and following the death of his mother, Gertrude Sarah, in 1937, a receiver was appointed to oversee Mr Baily Thomas’ affairs. Jocelyn Nagle became his receiver in 1939 and, at this time, Mr Baily Thomas owned approximately 51% of the Brewery’s Ordinary shares. With no living relatives, his estate was used to establish the Baily Thomas Provident Fund and the Baily Thomas Charitable Fund - a grant-making registered charity that supports research into learning disabilities.
The Baily Thomas Provident Fund will continue its valuable work until 2 October 2050 at which time remaining funds will be passed to the trustees of the Baily Thomas Charitable Fund.
